Munnar tahsildar says Revenue department in January had issued a stop memo for the construction work on the resort
Two construction workers were killed after the compound wall of an under-construction resort building at Thattathimukku, near Chithirapuram, in Munnar collapsed on them after earth caved in on Wednesday. The deceased have been identified as K.R. Rajeev, 40, of Anachal and Benny, 49, of Bison Valley.
According to the police, the incident occurred around 4 p.m. Construction work was under way on an approximately 20-ft high retaining wall. While the work was progressing, the earth caved in, and the workers were trapped under the debris. The workers were rescued after a long search by the Fire and Rescue Services personnel, the police and local residents, but their lives could not be saved.
The bodies have been shifted to the Adimaly Taluk Hospital for post-mortem examination.
According to Munnar special tahsildar Gayathri P.V., the 36-cent land belongs to Sherin Anila Joseph of Kumbalangi. “The Revenue department in January had issued a stop memo for the construction work on the resort. Later the village officer closed down the building and handed over the key to the Devikulam Subcollector. But the resort owner violated the stop memo and continued the construction, resulting in the accident. The Vellathooval Station House officer has been directed to register a criminal case against the resort owners,” said Ms Gayathri.
